Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, this week long event features the “independent and innovative” works of both professional filmmakers and students in a variety of genre including animation, documentary, narrative, shorts and full length films. The festival also includes a cinevation series where you can participate in a discussion with the filmmakers after the showing, as well as a variety of panels and workshops throughout the week.

Morning, afternoon, and evening screenings are held at the Trustees Theater and the Lucas Theatre with honored guests including Alec Baldwin, Oliver Stone, Lily Tomlin, Ellen Barkin, Aaron Eckhart, and James Marsden scheduled to be in attendance.

A boat parade on the May River and a Blessing Of The Fleet get things started on Sunday. Pat Conroy wrote and published his first book, The Boo, as a tribute to a beloved teacher, when he was still a student. Later, he accepted a job teaching in a one-room schoolhouse on Daufuskie Island, a story which he chronicled in his book The Water Is Wide.  Although he was  fired a year later for his nontraditional teaching methods, he had certainly left his mark on the children he taught that year – exposing them to new ideas and even taking the 18 children in his class to Washington, DC.

While Conroy went on to become a best-selling novelist,  he served as an inspiration to one of those students, Sallie Ann Robinson.  Robinson has published two cookbooks which share the traditional Gullah foods that her native island is famous for; Cooking the Gullah Way, Morning, Noon, and Night, and Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way: Smokin' Joe Butter Beans, Ol' 'Fuskie Fried Crab Rice,  Sticky-Bush Blackberry Dumpling, and Other Sea Island Favorites, which is a collection of recipes, stories, and personal reminiscences.

Sallie Ann says of her friendship with Pat, "That relationship brings back memories of a time when things were simple and people liked others for who they were, without any fear of what other people thought… I consider his story to be a timeless story of one man who didn't know what he was getting himself into. But despite that, he found joy in his discovery on a little island where the water will always be wide. Today, now that I am grown up and he is just a little older, our feelings about each other stay the same. And our moments together are shared remembering many folks who are now gone and the good old days of teaching each other".
